Water sub-metering and billing system

Automation with a human where it matters

Outcome

Replaced a manual, error-prone water-billing process across two properties with a system that automates the billing while keeping a human at the one step that matters.

How it was built

A human-verified meter-read step feeds automated downstream invoicing. The read stays human because vision AI silently misreads digits on meter faces — a single wrong digit bills a real tenant the wrong amount — so that is exactly where the human gate belongs. Everything after the verified read is automated: consumption, rate lookup, proration for mid-cycle move-ins and move-outs, and invoice generation. Billing across both properties was standardized onto a common cycle.

What it demonstrates

Automation with judgment — knowing where to automate and where not to. The discipline to leave manual the one step where an AI error would cause real harm, and to automate everything around it. A small, live system that embodies the whole approach.

You’re running operations on manual processes that strain as volume grows, and you suspect “just automate it” would create more problems than it solves.
